Bus Fares Go Up, But Mitigated by Fuel Subsidies

Bus riders have been waiting for more information on proposed fare increases due to rising gas prices. Well, today, the Ministry of Transport announced that after consultation with key stakeholders, Cabinet approved a blended approach to mitigating the problem. This consists of both a fuel subsidy for bus operators and an increase in bus fares. This, the department says means that the highest increase riders will encounter is only one dollar more for a one-way trip that is over twenty-five miles. For journeys of thirteen to twenty-five miles, fares will go up by fifty cents and below thirteen miles; the increase will be twenty-five cents. The new fares apply to both regular and express runs.
