Belizean Dorla Bowman Given Commonwealth “Point of Light” Award
Queen Elizabeth the second has recognized Dorla Bowman as the two hundred and twenty-second Commonwealth Point of Light awardee. Bowman, aged 70, is being recognized as one of Belize’s leading social justice activists. She has dedicated over 40 years to championing women’s rights, gender equality, and supporting women who have experienced domestic abuse. She served on Belize City Council, founded ‘Belize Women’s Political Caucus’ and created ‘Building People Movement’, a project to increase awareness of rights around sexual assault laws. Her Majesty the Queen is thanking inspirational volunteers across the fifty-four Commonwealth nations for the difference they are making in their communities and beyond. Each week a volunteer from a Commonwealth country will be recognized. By sharing these stories of service, the Commonwealth Points of Light awards seek to celebrate inspirational acts of volunteering and help inspire others to make their own contribution to tackling some of the greatest social challenges.
