Water Taxis Doing Brisk Business on Holy Thursday

Not everyone had the day off from work today, but those who did wasted no time in catching a boat out to the cayes, or doing the reverse and coming back in for their holiday weekend. News Five’s Paul Lopez was at the San Pedro Express terminal this morning where he spoke to Belizeans and visitors about their Easter plans.

While it is expected the over twenty thousand Belizeans will be crossing the northern border this weekend, there are already hundreds heading out to the cayes. Before noon this morning the lines at San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi were already filled with early travelers. Children and adults alike were excited to get a taste of island life at San Pedro and Caye Caulker.

Belizean Traveler

“Mainly in San Pedro, have some business right there.”

“What you think about the crowds going out?”

Belizean Traveler

“Oh, they will have special place for the golf carts. They will have different hotels and restaurants to go.”

Belizean Traveler

“I think it is good for the economy and just like getting back into the nick of things and getting society going and everything.”

We also met a few foreign tourists who were just as enthused to experience Belize’s beaches and aquatic wonders.

Paul Lopez

“You are from Guatemala?”

Foreign Tourist

“Guatemala.”

Paul Lopez

“Where are you going?”

Foreign Tourist

“We are going to San Pedro to the Ambergris Caye. We hear that it is an amazing place so.”

“Yeah it is going to be our first time there.”

“What are you expecting or what are you excited about?”

“We are excited to go snorkeling and just see what is there to see.”

One Belizean we spoke to who lives on one of the islands was headed in the opposite direction.

Belizean Traveler

“The reason is just to spend time my family over there, because I haven’t been there for a while yet so.”

Paul Lopez

“Where?”

Belizean Traveler

“In Benque.”

Paul Lopez

“So you are going to Benque to spend time with the family. So you didn’t want to stay on the island?”

Belizean Traveler

“Not really, cause I live there. So I just want to do something different this year, so yeah.”
