James Adderley has Sports Monday
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re certainly welcome to this fresh serving of Sports Monday. The volleyball competition at the City Center has picked up much intensity people so we sneaked our cameras in Saturday night for the featured match-up between Continental Flyers and Advance Advertising.
We pick up the action with the score tied at 10 apiece in the opening set as Anthony Williams of Continental breaks the tie with a smash that is mishandled by the opposition. Williams again provides offense for the Flyers with a monster spike that proves embarrassing to the Advance team. Carlton Cain tries to answer for Advance Advertising but Wallan Tillett sets down his smash with precision and ease. And then a left hand smash by Tillett gets through as the Continental team takes the first set 25-18.
So we go to the second set as Carlton Cain gets sweet revenge with this vicious spike that takes Tillett to the floor. But it’s the Flyers with a 4-point lead after Williams’ successful spike to Bernard Aguet who fails in the attempt to return. Luis Navaro then gets his shot in with a spike as Continental Flyers comes up with the 25-19 win to sweep Advance Advertising in 2 straight sets.
Changing gears folks, the Belize District Amateur Basketball Association kicked off its annual senior season yesterday at the City Center and we were there for the opener between Reggae by D River in blue and SanCas Seven Seas in yellow and black. In the early going it’s all SanCas; Richard Gentle, with the ponytail, gets the loose ball, underhands it to the hoop and yes, gets the bounce for 2. On a trip down court Gentle fumbles but the other stylish hairdo player on the Seven Seas team, Brain Popper rescues for 2.
The SanCas team shows good ball movement off a throw-in with Cleveland Rogers providing the big finish. But the River comes back; Brain Luna finds the open Francis Reyes and he knocks down the big tre. This time down court Reyes paints the short to find Anthony Castillo under the hoop, who gets the easy 2 and at the half the SanCas lead is down to one.
In second half the momentum flows immediately to Reggae by D River. Gadsden Ferguson leaves the 3 short but Floyd Talbert is there to make 2 out of it as the River goes up by 7. However, Ferguson makes amends with an aerobatic, 180, no-look that hits nothing but cotton and he would finish with 11 pts. At the other end Winston Ashley goes to the left hand for 2 of his game high 14 points but it wouldn’t be enough to lift SanCas over the hump. Floyd Talbert strikes for 2 of his game high 12 points and would also grab 11 rebounds. Reggae by the River wins its opener in a 56-45 final score.
In the other match on the schedule Smiling Dogs edged Peyrefitte Energizers 60-59.
In closing folks we want to salute the athletes who received special awards from the YWCA as part of the Women’s Week program. Receiving Sportswoman of the Year awards were Hadie Gomez, a past tennis standout, Lupita Quan – volleyball player and coach and National Team Softball pitcher Kenisha Sutherland. Nuff respect to the ladies; without the ladies the world wouldn’t be what it is today.
That’s it. We wanna thank you for joining us. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
