B.T.B. launches clean-up campaign

Story Picture
The Belize Tourist Board has launched a massive nationwide anti-litter campaign that will remain in effect until September twenty-first. Throughout March the Ministry of Tourism in conjunction with non-governmental organizations and schools will be holding a number of activities promoting the need to clean up Belize. On March thirteenth, the Northern Highway between Belize City and Orange Walk Town will be busy as representatives from B.T.B., the Scout Association of Belize, The Girl Guides of Belize, SCOPE, the Belize City Council and the Belize Waste Control will be picking up the litter scattered along the highway. Shakira Samuels is B.T.B.’s marketing officer.

“As you know the Northern Highway is trafficked a lot by the buses and we do get some complaints with drivers being behind buses or anybody else who is just coming along the highway. And we do get people disposing of their garbage from the windows, etc. That is one way we are doing it, cleaning up the highway and the other thing we are planning on doing is working with the Bus Owners Association to implement a long term plan for them to clean up the highway by having garbage bags available in the buses.”

Also assisting in the clean up will be Orange Walk Technical, the Ministry of Works and the Orange Walk Town Board. According to Samuels, B.T.B. has also approached Citco to assist them in cleaning up the city. Samuels says they have been encouraged by the number of concerned citizens across the country who have committed themselves to joining the National Anti-Litter Campaign.
