Economic Growth for 2022 Looks Promising

Joseph Waight

Waight said that the outlook for this year is promising and that tourism and agriculture are performing as Belize’s biggest revenue earners.

Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary

“We’re on a growth path and what we see here is that each sector of the economy is projected to do better than last year. We’re projecting a growth rate of five point eight percent in total. That can change, but I think it’s fairly solid, but on the other hand, we have to watch the inflation at the same time. At the bottom of the slide we’ll what contributions to each major component of the G.D.P. outlook is made by industry: sugar, bananas, tourism – so those numbers show essentially what element contributes to what segment of the total G.D.P. package. Again, tourism is the bog leader, but I have to say that agriculture is doing better as well and the government’s emphasis is to try to diversify our exports, try to improve our trade relations with our neighbours, not forgetting CARICOM, but our neighbours are Mexico and Guatemala, particularly in grains and livestock.”
