The Churches are Prepared to Present 20,000 Signatures to G.G. Tzalam
Senator Moses Benguche, Bishop of the Methodist Church and head of the Belize Council of Churches, will be heading to Belize House on May third to present Governor General Froyla Tzalam with a sheaf of documents containing almost twenty thousand signatures. It is the latest move by the religious community to trigger a referendum on the legalization of cannabis.
Pastor Louis Wade, National Evangelical Association of Belize
“The bishop of the Methodist Church who is also the church senator, Senator Moses Benguche, was notified by our taskforce that we had reached the ten percent triggering mechanism, so that he can officially inform the Governor General that the threshold had been met and that we intended to trigger a referendum using the laws of Belize. The bishop was about to leave the country and so he wrote the Governor General and left the country, returning early this week. The Governor General has responded and has set Tuesday morning at ten a.m., third of May, as the day when the small group will be going to visit the Governor General and the Senator of the Church will be presenting the petitions. We have a small buffer, these nineteen thousand signatures have been vetted and we are approaching twenty thousand.”
