P.U.P. goes for Strike Four
The People’s United Party formally introduced its candidates for the March third City Council last night at a victory rally at the Pound Yard under the theme, “Big Up Belize City,” the candidates, introduced by area representative and standard bearers from each division of the city, presented their vision for the city and the role of the party in renewing the old capital. The P.U.P. 11 is headed by mayoral candidate David Fonseca who is flanked by some familiar faces in local politics such as Darrel Carter, Merilyn Young, Danny Madrid, Raymond Cox and of course, Mayor Marshall Nuñez. But also making the bid for councilor seats are Yasmin Shoman, Eloisa Trujeque, Austin Waight, Gus Perrera, and Lillette Barkley Waite. Here’s a sample of the views shared by the newcomers:
Yasmin Shoman
“I feel very honored to be a part of the P.U.P., but I feel particularly because I am one of four female candidates that the P.U.P. has fielded. This my friends reinforces the People’s United Party’s commitment to promote women in politics and to offer them equal opportunities, which is what we need.”
Eloisa Trujeque
“Some people don’t like to come out and vote in City Council because as I have been going through the Mesopotamia Division some people come out and say, “I don’t vote in City Council Election, I only vote in big election.” Why are they going to abandon the city? Our city is the biggest thing. We have all sorts of things to solve, so many complaints, so many issues, so many concerns, and so we must uplift this city.”
Austin Waight
“We come to you to ask you to give us the opportunity to serve you and Belize by making the city a healthier, cleaner, safer and more vibrant tourist attractive place. We have the dream that our city can be a real sports center with all facilities in good shape. We sincerely believe that culturally, we are second to none and as your City Council, we want to promote culture, sports and music to the max.”
Gus Perrera
“If I am to share my vision of a new Belize City, I can tell you that I see a People’s United Party City Council, with a dynamic and competent management team, eleven candidates working diligently with a P.U.P. central government to create a new city, a city where community leaders would be involved in the process of management of the city’s affairs and where we will create new standards of living for every Belizean.”
Lillette Barkley Waite
“We strike one; we strike two; we strike three. Guess what we will do now? Home run! So, I’m going to end with this, just ask that you all come out and vote on March third for City Council, vote P.U.P. 11 down the line. Together, this is our city, we will big it up and raise the roof. Thank you.”
The United Democratic Party will be holding its convention to select a slate of City Council candidates this Sunday at Bird’s Isle.
