Teaching Young Men How to be There for Their Children
According to William Dawson, Director of the Leadership Intervention Unit, the idea is to introduce various aspects of fatherhood to these young men in order to create and foster a bond between them and their children.

“The Department of Youth Services, along with the LIU and the Band of Brothers, is hosting this initiative where we are housing thirty young men at the Machaca Resort from June eighth to the eleventh and we are hoping that this parenting workshop will build the capacity of the young men and what we want to do is try to bring more to the table as it relates to the role of parents, especially as a father. And the responsibility, it‘s not to suggest that these guys aren‘t good parents but what we want to do is to make sure that at the end of the day we provide that level of support for them based on the stigma that many young men who are involved in crime and violence really either die or go to prison and leave their children on the mercy of the world. And so, we want to try to see how we can do our part in providing that access for them to be able to be mentored and to be given that opportunity to understand their role, especially as fathers.”
