Belizean Powerlifter Makes History in South Africa

Belizean Professional Powerlifter Kaylon Cadle Godoy is back in Belize, following a historic trip to the World Open Classic Power Lifting Champions in South Africa. Godoy made history by being the first Belizean to compete in the championship matchup. Furthermore, he placed eight in his category out of twenty competitors, making him not only the strongest man in Belize but also one of the strongest men in the world. We caught up with Godoy upon arrival at the P.G.I.A. today to hear more about his historic experience.

“Mainly I am just really appreciative for the opportunity. We have done powerlifting for a while. It has been great. WE have nationals. We have a team for that. I am really excited to be able to be the first to represent us. It was a really cool experience and I was really grateful for that.”

Now, let’s talk about it about the day you competed, there was a bit of challenge in your first two squats which you appeared to overcome. What was running through your mind and how were you able to gather yourself?

“So, the biggest thing from that that we learn right away, and the only way you learn is by being there and being able to experience it, was that Worlds is different. So, we have done NAPF, we have done Belize Nationals, we have seen competitions such as Mega Nationals for the U.S.A, and we have seen depth calls and it was not the same as Worlds. So, there were really strict, which I mean that is Worlds. The first one was not the ideal way to start, and then the second one when we got the no depth as well that was a very sticky situation. We had a really cool guy, shout out to David Ricks who said that if you feel like you are at depth just go deeper than that. The one thing was to go out there and not bomb, thankfully we recovered. I have been doing powerlifting for about three to four years. We did not plan on going to Worlds as yet. A few months ago Alida had the idea and Chris and I always talks and it was not something we wanted to do this year, and then Alida probed the idea a little bit. We were like cool. Before you knew it, we were on our way to Worlds.”
