Mayor Says Streets are Still on the Council’s Priority List

Aside from the regular street repairs, there has not been large scale resurfacing of streets in Belize City lately.  The Belize City Council has invested in the repair of well over a hundred streets during its two-terms in office and, as it heads into the last half of its term, the city’s infrastructure will again be priority on the council’s to-do list. Mayor Bernard Wagner shared that there are still quite a number of streets left to resurface in the less trafficked areas, such as the Antelope Street Extension and Pelican Street Extension.

“We are right now negotiating some significant infrastructure work for the city between this year and next year, significant infrastructure in terms of streets – in terms of really addressing some of those back streets whereby people suffer each and every day when it rains or when it doesn’t rain, it becomes dust. We shouldn’t be living in a city no longer where when ih nuh rain yoh have this dust to deal with. So I promise you and I promise the residents of this city that between this year and next year we’ll be doing significant infrastructure. I can’t tell you the numbers but we are getting the funding to really address streets issues in our city.”

“And how much funding?”

Bernard Wagner

“Uhm, we are looking at between four to five million (dollars).”
