Belize Powerlifting Association Prepares for Regional Championships

In another historic feat for powerlifting in Belize, the Belize Powerlifting Association has assembled a team of eight athletes to compete in the North American Powerlifting Championship in Panama, in July. A few weeks ago, we told you about Kaylon Godoy’s exceptional performance at the World Open Classic Power Lifting Champions in South Africa. Well a team of powerlifting athletes from Belize is currently preparing to raise the bar, when it comes to this growing sport in North America.  The team is currently open to sponsorship, so as to cover the cost of their trip. We spoke with Khalid Usher, Co-President of the Belize Powerlifting Association, via Zoom.

“It is annual regional, North American Powerlifting Championship. It will be hosted in Panama City, Panama. We are leaving on the twelfth, returning on the nineteenth and competing in that time. Currently, we have eight people assigned to our team. We picked basically the best of the best from when we had our nationals this year. That is four men and four women. In that group, because again powerlifting is very inclusive as a sport, we have master lifters and junior lifters competing. That is we have our junior lifter who is twenty one, and our oldest masters lifter who is fifty nine. I can’t even put it into words, how exciting it is for a team to represent us in this competition. It has been a long time. We have had some setbacks along the way. But, definitely again, we consider these people the best of the best in Belize. We are going with the mindset that we are bringing back medals and accolades for the country. Right now we are in the process of fundraising and we are very open to sponsors at the moment. As you can imagine, sending eight people to Panama is costly. We have to pay for the flights, the hotels, food for the athletes and the participation fee and different thinks like that. And if anyone would like to contact us you can do so as 667-2091, or through our email at belizepowerlifting@gmail.com.”
