Vessel Monitoring System Helped with Distress at Sea
Approximately seventy fishing vessels were equipped with the monitoring system used in the pilot project. And according to Wildlife Conservation Society’s Technical Coordinator for Sustainable Fisheries, Julio Maz, the system was also used in response for distress at sea.

“The vessel monitoring system has been used to assist fisherfolk in distress when there were piracy at sea incidents. We used this technology to receive the alerts while at the same time direct the law enforcement agencies to where these guys were and within a matter of about thirty to forty minutes, the law enforcement agencies were able to be on site and provide the necessary support to the fisherfolk.”
