NTUCB Senator Raises Concerns over Government Borrowing

Elena Smith

Senator for the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, Elena Smith, also added her voice to the debate on the six million U.S dollars loan motion. Her concerns were focused on the negative effects of continuous borrowing on the local economy. Here is how she explained it.

Elena Smith, NTUCB Senator

“I myself did not expect to hear that, well this isn’t a new loan; it is one that was received before. We reviewed this matter as a new loan. So, our concerns, as we would normally share, would be as it relates to loans. We are aware that the country as we were told was in dire straits, economically, and the government had to do its best to figure out ways of being able to survive. We know that there was a group put together to address the matter of the Blue bond to help us to stay afloat. Considering all of that and having a loan of six point two, and having had previous loans come before us, we are concerned that we may eventually end up where we were. Because, if we cleared one because we wanted to stay afloat, but almost every time we have a Senate meeting we have one, we may end up in that very same place again. I hope you are to recall if we end up in that place who would be the persons to suffer.”
