James Adderley has Sports Monday
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and we’re back with another dish of Sports Monday. Week six of the second round in the B.F.L. Football Tournament took us to the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday and the Yabra Sporting Club hosts La Victoria of Corozal as both teams take the field.
If the city fans had great expectations from their team it was quickly dispelled when five minutes deep Clifford Usher beats goalkeeper Willie Bo and defenceman McColly to score for a quick 1-zip La Victoria lead. It’s only four and a half minutes later when Clifford Usher bends this pass to a streaking Christopher Hendrix and boom… it’s a 2-zip lead for the boy from El Norte. Could it be #3 here when Barrahona deals to Clifford Usher, Willie Bo says an emphatic, “so sir”.
Yabra looks for goal when McColly finds his brother, super-striker “Manu” McColly but Delmar Sutherland easily corrals the consequence header. On the very next play, Rueben Crawford misplays and pays the maximum price when Clifford Usher whips this shot past Willie Bo and the fans are stunned by a 3-zip Victoria lead 20 minutes in. Emory Nuñez then fires this long-range floater hoping to put Yabra on the boards but the cross bar intervenes. Downfield Clifford Usher looks for his third with this right foot in traffic but Willie Bo dives and saves and at the half it’s a 3-nil Victoria lead.
After intermission Yabra goes offensive off this spotkick and while McColly makes a good effort the ball goes back harmlessly to La Victoria. But it’s a bad goal day for Yabra indeed when Delmar Sutherland makes this mistake and gets away with it. Yes it’s real people and further proof is provided by Jorge Herrera who is inside the goal and can’t score. Who does take the score through is Clifford Usher who absolutely out runs the Yabra defense to force a one on one situation with Willie Bo. And then he raises the pill for the hat trick as 4-zip final score for La Victoria.
With that loss Yabra didn’t loose too much ground in the playoff loss since down south Jube was held to be a scoreless draw by Southern United while Belmopan Builders were stunned 4-2 by the Dangriga Jaguars. Out west second round header Sagitun of Mango Creek issued a 4-1 blast on Real Verdes and up north Juventus blast Acros 4-2.
Turning to the basketball scene, let’s join the finals in the female division of the National Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament where city champ Pallotti faces the girls from Toledo Community College.
It’s Pallotti off to the good start as Ursula Johnson banks it home for two. And then Johnson comes back down to strike for two more as Pallotti grabs the lead. T.C.C. begins to come alive when Stephanie Lambey picks up this ball and takes it strong to the hoop for two. Lambey has it again on this breakaway but at the half it is Pallotti up by 3.
In second half T.C.C. takes command, Dorette Cayetano works for 2 and gets it. It’s more Stephanie Lambey as she takes on the Pallotti defense for 2. And then when she comes up with this tap and takes it all the way as T.C.C. picks up the big “W” 27-20 to take the championship.
On the male side the Corozal Community College started swiftly in its championship match-up with the city champ Excelsior High thanks to this long range from Valentine Young. Excelsior responds with Nigel Flowers who scoops it up for 2 and then he goes into the painted area for this throw up that’s good. Tyrone Felix then threads the needle to Donald McKay who makes it good and at the half it’s an 11 point Excelsior lead.
Second half brings more of the same people, Nigel Flowers drops short, Marlon Alvarez rescues. Excelsior goes on to win by 15 and we say congrats.
In Orange Walk basketball play Saturday night, O.W. East beats Rick’s Block and Tiles 88-70, and Music Center gets pass Brotherhood 64-49.
That’s it folks. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
