P.U.P. candidates for City Council chosen

Story Picture
Although the election is not until March, the People’s United Party held a convention this weekend to select their roster of candidates. David Fonseca emerged as the candidate for Mayor. Marshall Nuñez who had fought so determinedly against Merilyn Young to become Mayor after the position was vacated by Jose Coye in September told News Five he decided not to run because he believes he could not win against Fonseca. Nuñez will seek a position as councilor along with eight others: Danny Madrid, Merilyn Young, Eloisa Trujeque, Lillette Barkely, Gus Pererra, Austin Waight, Raymond Cox, and Yasmin Shoman. News Five spoke with Mayoral candidate David Fonseca this afternoon.

“The number one problem in Belize City I would want to think is the crime element. I would also want to believe that the City Council will be looking and will be more involve with the national government in order to curve this problem. We are looking at more detailed programs as we speak right now. Working with the Ministry of National Security. So we hope that will eventually materialize into something positive in order to curb the crime element of the city.

I would like to concentrate more efforts to bring life into Belize City. Improving on the economic state of the city itself. We will be looking at programs to attract new business into Belize City, attract more tourists in the city. At least I would like to see a tourist attraction plan put in place specifically in the city. We need to work very hard to get the kids off the street. There are programs we will put together for that to happen to curb the drug abuse problem in the city. To have more coordination taking place with utility bodies and N.G.O.s so that everything happen in order instead of everyone doing their own thing.”

Fonseca says he believes it will be a good thing for the people of Belize City to elect their Mayor rather than have the City Council choose one. He says this will help the person elected to carry out his or her mandate more effectively.
