P.S.U. Rails Against Proposed Appointment of Moises Cal to Public Service Commission

The Public Service Union is up in arms over a proposal by the Briceño administration to Moises Cal as Chair of the Public Service Commission.  As Belize’s former Ambassador to Guatemala, Cal’s reputation was tarnished when he was reportedly under investigation by law enforcement authorities in Panama after allegedly being found in possession of a million dollars.  The former senior diplomat was accused of money laundering and bribery, in connection with that incident in 2007.  Earlier today, when News Five spoke with P.S.U. President Dean Flowers, he told us that should the controversial appointment proceed, the union will enter into a trade union with government.

“I am baffled when I see these types of recommendations being put forward and you must ask yourself whether or not or who is advising the prime minister, you know, because I think that this perhaps is the most foolish appointment or recommendation that I have seen under this administration. I mean there‘s a whole lot that we can criticize but this one blew us all away. In terms of course of action, in my humble view, because of the sad state of affairs in which the public service is in, I think if this appointment was to go through, it would mean that the Public Service Union would have to rally its troops to declare a trade dispute with this administration because if that commission, if we were not comfortable with the newly composed commission, it would mean then that from the onset there would be bias and if there is bias and lack of confidence from us towards members of the commission, it would mean then that the decisions that would be coming out of that commission may very well all end up in court.”
