Yabra residents capture neighborhood “haligata”

Story Picture
When things are slow in the hard news department we can usually depend on our stalwart viewers to provide us with good filler in the form of a wild animal story. This morning was no exception as residents of Albert Street West in the Yabra area reported that a six-foot crocodile, known locally as “haligata,” was making life interesting. Basil Brannon gave us the details.

“We threw a big line out and caught it and hooked on something. We hooked on it. The “haligata” hook the line and then we pulled him. He went ashore and swallowed two pieces of chicken foot we put on the hook. And then we start pulling him in. When we pulled him in we put a rope around his neck and tied him up there. We are waiting for the zoo to come and take him.

The “haligata” heavy. He gave us a good fight. He wanted to pull us back to the water but we were stronger than the “haligata.” Four of us pulled him in.”

Known hangouts for “haligatas” include virtually all parts of Belize City near the sea, river or canals. It is believed that today’s catch was taken to a remote area outside of town and released unharmed.
