YWCA offers lifesaving course

Story Picture
If you are sixteen years old and know how to swim, then you may just be the person the YWCA is looking for. This weekend, the Young Women’s Christian Association will be holding a lifeguard training course to equip swimmers with the necessary skills needed to save someone’s life. Jane Hannon, a volunteer with the YWCA is the course’s coordinator.

Jane Hannon, Coordinator, Lifeguard Course

“We will be focusing on preventative lifeguarding, is the whole concept behind it. It’s an American Red Cross course for lifeguarding. What we want to teach is eliminating hazards and dangers, so that it never gets to the point where you have a drowning. If we train them what to do, in the case if there is a drowning person, how to react in an emergency, what steps to follow and how to save somebody’s life.”

Q: “Is this course a part of a series that the Y has been holding?”

Jane Hannon

“Not exactly, we did another training last year. It is the same training that we will be doing this time around. We would like to get as much people trained as we can.”

If you are interested in attending the lifeguard training course, you are asked to get in touch with the YWCA at telephone number, 44971. The course begins this Saturday at the YWCA pool on Freetown Road.
