Weekend sporting update

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley so pull up for this fresh version of Sports Monday. The annual secondary schools basketball tournament is upon us people, and Friday night found the opening of the Belize City season at the City Centre so let’s peep in on the main event.

Meet the defending champion Wesley College in their pre-game huddle and you guessed it right, it is slow time against archrival St. John’s College. The first bucket of the ballgame comes from Kingley James who grabs the offensive rebound for a two point put back for S.J.C. In response Eric Garbutt slices through the heart of the S.J.C. defense to pick the bucket and the foul. At the other end its George Jones with the fresh move and he keeps S.J.C. in the lead. For Wesley the Erkleman is the big man and here he shows why. If you like ball movement S.J.C. puts on this clinic which K.J. finishes for 2. Down court Wesley gets 2 points when Sam Carcamo finds Arson Elrington and he knocks down the jumper. At the half S.J.C. is up by 19.

In second half when K.J. gets this bucket to fall S.J.C. goes up by 10 points. With some 11 minutes to go in the ball game Wesley looks to Eric Garbutt for offense and he delivers. It’s more Wesley College when Sam Carcamo steals to convert an easy 2. Of course Garbutt can’t hit all but on this miss, Elrington makes it good for his team. In money-time Deon Augustine mounts this individual effort to give S.J.C. a 1-point lead. But here comes the Erkleman taking it to the S.J.C. defense for the biggest 2 points of the ball game. Still S.J.C. has a shot at the win with this tre – Darwin Trejeque misses – Wesley holds on the 39-38 big win thanks to sixteen points from Eric Garbutt.

In the female undercard Wesley College got past A.C.C. 29-14 on a game high of 16 points from Denisha Renan. In other high school play over the weekend S.C.A. handled Gwen Lizarraga by 18-4 and Excelsior mauled Belize Continuation also 18-4. While in male play Nazarene beat Gwen 57-34 while Excelsior rallied past A.C.C. 33-24.

Turning to the football scene, the Esso Tigers Challenge Cup completed first round play with a 5 game schedule that left only 1 back match remaining. Here at the M.C.C. Grounds the Yabra Jaguars are under the watchful gaze of Referee Orlando Pelayo. But it’s the Dangriga team off to the quick start and while this right foot punch misses the target it displays the awesome fire power of Marvin Lambey.

Folks, it’s only ten minutes deep when David McCauley slices this spotkick perfectly to give Yabra a 1-zip lead. Dangriga tries to answer on this press but the subsequent header sails high. The Dangriga team should have tied the ballgame here folks but obviously they looked the gift horse in the mouth. Four minutes to the half Nelson Moss fires a perfect strike into the pigeon hole and at the half it’s a 1-1 ballgame. By the way, to the new Sports Council we say, please fix the lights at the M.C.C. Grounds; it’s a part of your job description.

Still second half rolls on and it’s all Yabra when David McCauley does this aerobatics thing that looks good but fails to bring results. McCauley keeps this spotkick alive for the Honduran import Jose who gives Yabra a 2-1 lead. 5 minutes later McCauley serves into the danger zone. Again the Honduran import converts as Yabra goes up 3-1. Again it’s McCauley with the offensive pressure for Yabra but it’s Paulie Bradley, who gets the final goal, in the Yabra 4-1 big “W” over Dangriga.

Again we remind the Sports Council, the lights at the M.C.C. Grounds need to be looked at immediately.

In other football play over the weekend Juventus blanked Southern United 1-zip, Sagitun mashed Jube 5-2, La Victoria vanquished Real Verdes 3-1, while out at Capital City, Builders Hardware held Acros to a 2-2 stalemate.

Hey folks that’s our show for today, we certainly invite you back, same time, same place. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
