Surveillance Cameras to be Erected on John Smith Road

The John Smith Road, in recent times, has been an area of concern to the Belize Police Department because it has been used for the disposal of the bodies of murder victims. ComPol Chester Williams told the media today that while the department is under-resourced to place patrols in the area, they are considering the installation of surveillance cameras as an initial strategy by police to ward off people who are dumping bodies along the four-mile stretch of road.

“We would like to put a mobile patrol in the area, but at this time it is extremely difficult due to our human resource constraints. Nonetheless, I am hoping that sometime next week, we should be able to erect three surveillance cameras there. One at each entry and the other in the middle and with that we should be able to have some coverage of the John Smith Road in the interim until we can have the human resource to put a patrol in the area.”

“What about lighting? Do you believe there needs to be better lighting back there?”

Chester Williams

“I do believe that the lighting condition of the John Smith Road is good. Perhaps in certain areas there may be a need to put lights, and that is something we certainly can discuss with B.E.L. to see what they can do to help.”
