Price of flour finally goes down
It is one food item that shot up by fifty percent in one year alone and had been vexing consumers. But tonight we can report that the price of flour has finally gone down reflecting decreases in prices of wheat internationally. According to a government release, the new maximum wholesale price of La Gitana flour, is sixty-nine dollars per one hundred pound sack, that means a reduction of thirteen dollars from the old price of eighty-two dollars. Households in Belize City will now be paying no more than seventy-nine cents per pound but the retail price is seventy-two cents, down by thirteen cents. According to G.O.B., this allows an eight cent mark-up to grocery stores. In San Pedro, residents will pay the highest: eighty-four cents, in Benque Viejo del Carmen and Punta Gorda eighty-two cents and in Corozal, Dangriga and San Ignacio, the price is eighty-one cents. In Belmopan and Orange Walk, meanwhile, consumers will pay no more than eighty cents per pound. The government also announced that it is giving new life to the position of Controller of Supplies and has appointed Mr. Jose Trejo from the Bureau of Standards to the post.
