MoE Still Engaged with St Luke’s to Settle with Aggrieved Teacher

Joanna Ysaguirre

Back in May, we watched a Facebook live post in dismay as Saint Luke Primary School teacher, Joanna Ysaguirre broke down in tears and shared what she felt was sheer stress and unnecessary humiliation that she was forced to work under at the hands of the school’s management. Her post quickly won the empathy of the masses and the Ministry of Education and the Belize National Teachers’ Union intervened and investigated. But while students are back in school, Ysaguirre has been relegated to sit under a shed on the compound.  Another revelation is that the teacher was put to teach standard three students when her teacher’s license qualifies her to teach only up to standard one. She has sought legal counsel and has, through her attorney, written to the school to return the teacher to the classroom and to place her within a classroom that is in conformity with her teaching license. Today, Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca informed that while that is the case, the ministry is still engaged with the administration of the school to determine how best to move forward with that matter.
