Police Commissioner: Police Will Crack Down on Gangs in Antelope Street Extension Area
One incident which Police were not hesitant to call a murder was the shooting death last Friday of Jarett Crawford in the Antelope Street Extension area of Belize City. Crawford was at home when he was suspected to have been lured outside where he was gunned down. And Commissioner Chester Williams revealed that there are three street gangs operating in the Antelope Street Extension area that are the cause of the high criminal activity in that area.
A.S.P. Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“That person was at home when they called him out of his house and immediately he was fired upon. So the classification of the investigation is different in each case. That’s a clear case of murder.”
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“We are looking at Antelope Street very strongly and as I’ve said to the media houses on Saturday, I think it’s time that we take a different look at Antelope Street and do something more drastic in terms of addressing those gang issues in that particular area. There are three different gangs operating in that area and they do have their rivalries among themselves and that is what is driving the murders in that area. Like I said, we’re looking at it and those gang elements in that area who seemingly don’t want to adhere to living a peaceful way of life or to behave in a manner that is compatible to regular human behaviour, then we have to do something about them.”
