Good neighbor donates to fire victims
An exercise in good neighborliness has brought smiles to the victims of a recent fire. The Raymond Arnold family lost almost everything in the Thursday morning blaze which gutted their home in the lower flat of a house situated at the corner of Antelope Street and Central American Boulevard. Elvis Samuels, who lives next door, mobilized the neighborhood this weekend and the result was a street side ceremony this afternoon.
Elvis Samuels, Neighbor
“Well, actually what I did, I kind of put a bar-b-cue together, got the cooperation of the neighbors involved and this is where we are today. We put more than two hundred chickens together and we have overall sales of twelve hundred Belize. And our good friend down the street, Archie’s Restaurant, they were good enough to contribute three hundred. So we have to present to the victims, fifteen hundred Belize dollars.”
Q: “This effort, why did you find it necessary to undertake it?”
Elvis Samuels
“I had no choice because as a neighbor, living alongside, it could have affected me as well in the event the fire had jumped its barriers. And I believe as people and also as neighbors it would be nice for the country at large to operate in a manner that I did. We all need one another.”
Raymond Arnold, Fire Victim
“Well to tell the truth, the help and the support the neighbors have shown is extremely overwhelming, and we really appreciate it. It’s like an inspiration. I don’t know where they get the inspiration from but it was very timely. We are extremely grateful for this contribution. It’s but a fraction of what we actually lost but it comes in really handy and we hope that this serves as inspiration to other people to help victims like this in a situation like this. I could safely say, you could quote me on this that as of today, whenever I get my feet on the ground, should anything like this happen to anybody else, I want to be the first to help.”
Samuels says that while he has no immediate plans to do more fund raising, the victims of the fire can always count on him for support as they try to put the shattered pieces of their lives back together.
