Vonetta Hyde wins open scholarship
A familiar name has won the prestigious Belize Open Scholarship for 1998. Vonetta Hyde, a recent graduate of S.J.C. Junior College, received the highest ranking of any Belizean student on the University of Cambridge advanced level exam taken in June. As such she has been awarded by the government a full university scholarship covering all tuition, living and travelling expenses. The nineteen year old, daughter of Evan X Hyde and Claudette Coleman, is also the sister of Minister of Education Cordel Hyde. She is presently attending John Carrol University in Ohio. Placing second on the exam was Ruben Martinez, also of S.J.C., who has won a scholarship to the University of the West Indies. The next three highest achievers, also from St. John’s, were Amir Hassan, Victor Lizarraga and Fernando Coye.
