Fugitive killed in shootout with police
One of Belize’s most wanted criminals has today been scratched from the list. Victor Sanker an accused murderer who had escaped from Hattieville on August twenty-fifth, was killed in the village of San Antonio after a shootout with police. According to a police press release, officers from Corozal were called to San Antonio around two thirty this morning after Sanker had broken into the home of his former girlfriend, Yescencia Leal, and locked himself in along with Leal, her current boyfriend, Kenny Williams, and three children. When Sanker tried to shoot the boyfriend, Sanker’s gun allegedly jammed, at which time Williams fired his own gun at Sanker, who then fled the house, apparently wounded. When police searched the area around the house Sanker opened fire and police shot back. At dawn a search of the area revealed that Sanker was dead, with two bullets in his chest. A thirty-eight revolver found next to his body still contained two live rounds and thirty-seven more were found in Sanker’s pockets. The gun proved to have been stolen in a September fifth robbery. Sanker had been charged with the murder of Alejandro Cano on April first.
