Self-Reliance and Low Electricity Rates are Overall End Goal of Energy Policy
Chebat says that identifying as many homegrown sources as possible is key to making that environmentally-conscious shift to becoming self-reliant, and making the transition while keeping electricity rates at a minimum is the overall objective.
Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities
“One of the things we can do is expand, for example – some of the work that we’re doing through BELCOGEN and through Santander, which use the bagasse to generate energy. I cannot tell you it’s going to happen overnight. I know it will not happen overnight, if we work at it, eventually it will happen and for our national security, it must happen sooner than later. At the end of the day it has to mean lower prices. You will know that our cost has skyrocketed because of the ever-increasing cost of petroleum. That is the biggest problem, and the war in Ukraine has made a bad situation even worse, hence the urgency to try to find these alternative sources.”
