Ministry of Agriculture Celebrates World Food Day 2022

The Ministry of Agriculture celebrated World Food Day 2022 at the Agriculture and Natural Resource Institute in the Stann Creek District. The theme for this year’s activities is “Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and a Better Life.”   We heard remarks from Jose Mai, the Minister of Agriculture, and Doctor Louis Zabaneh, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education.

“The Food and Agriculture Organization for United Nations marks world food day each year on the sixteenth of October, the day on which the organization was founded in 1945. World Food Day was first held on October sixteenth 1981. This year’s theme, our actions are our future, better production, better nutrition, and a better life. Focuses on some of the many issues such as hunger, obesity, environmental, climate change, are among the many challenges countries, including Belize, are facing. We combat these by promoting social protection programs, environmental conscience and good agricultural practices and more resilient food systems. We do this keeping in mind the international objective of World Food Day, which in our country, we support.”

“Today is a very special day. The Agricultural and Natural Resource Institute (ANRI) is a very important institution not just for my constituency but for the whole south. This is the only high school in the south that focuses on Agriculture and natural resource management. A few years ago we came and saw that it really needed some help. I made appeals to the Ministry of agriculture and other partners. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Agriculture; they came out and helped to restore the institution. We are planning to increase the enrollment. We have capacity of four hundred, but we are closer to fifty right now.”
