Book of poetry examines less fortunate side of Belize
First it was “Hard Time, Ketch and Kill.” Now the self styled bachelor of antics is at it again, only this time Jim Arnold has ventured into the publishing business. His first book, a collection of Creole and English poems titled: “Just For You,” is available at bookstores in Belize City. Arnold says his book is for anyone interested in the Creole culture and language and has even put music to some of the poems.
Jim Arnold, Author, “Just For You”
“Sleeping in the park some nights I get inspiration from these homeless people and by so doing it brings together stronger ties with the people that usually, the society look down upon. It’s a collection of Creole proverbs and it’s to benefit the Belizean people who are loosing touch with their culture.
One of the poetry that made it headlines and that gave it high rating to the Belize ethnic society was the poem, “Don’t Think You’re Better”. And they have another one in there, “Correct Me If I’m Wrong,” which speaks about the actions of some secretaries in certain business places.”
Q: “For Jim Arnold, what do you hope to achieve by putting out this book of poems?”
Jim Arnold
“Well it’s just to get the Belizean people closer knit. Regardless of ethnic background, we should all stick and unite together as one.”
The book is published by Belize Creations and printed by Peni Printers in Belmopan. Arnold says initially, a thousand copies of the book were printed, but due to the demand, an additional three thousand copies have been ordered. The book of Creole and English poems sold for six dollars each, but business has been so good, that Arnold has upped the price to ten dollars per copy. The artist says he plans to donate some of future profits to the Cancer Society and the Children’s Home in Belmopan.
