Shyne Asks, “Where are the Briceño Administration’s Priorities?”
The United Democratic Party held a press conference today to discuss a variety of issues, save for the elephant in the room which is the failed recall attempt of Shyne Barrow’s leadership, as well as the Patrick Faber fiasco. The U.D.P. also discussed recent concerns being raised by the public service in respect of allowances being doubled for Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Department in the Briceño administration. It’s a sore point for the Public Service Union which has come out swinging against the decision taken by the Cabinet Secretary. We’ll have more on that later, but here’s what Opposition Leader Barrow had to say this morning.
Shyne Barrow. Party Leader, U.D.P.
“When we talk about priority, we have the C.E.O.’s who already make about eighty thousand dollars per annum. When you add all of their allowances and their base salary, who took no cut during the Briceño administration when they implemented the ten percent reduction in salary for our public officers. The prime minister is misleading the public, he‘s a stranger to the truth. When he tries to tell the media houses, I saw him when he was manhandling the journalist from Channel 7, not wanting to answer her question which the media has a right to question everything that the government does, as well as the opposition. But he misled the public when he said that the C.E.O.’s were getting back what they lost, the cuts that they took as an implementation by the Briceño administration to deal with the COVID pandemic. That is an outright lie. The C.E.O.’s got a reduction under the Barrow administration; they made no such agreement with the Briceño administration. So where is the priority of this government? It shouldn’t be for C.E.O.’s who are already making eighty thousand dollars. I have to confess, I am not happy with the fact that a C.E.O. makes more than the Leader of the Opposition or members of the House of Representatives who work twenty-four hours. My work is never done.”
