Police Department Prepares For Impact of TS Lisa

Chester Williams

We also spoke with Commissioner of Police Chester Williams about the department’s preparations ahead of TS Lisa making landfall. Here is what he told us earlier today at an event in Belize City.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“This morning I met with all my commanders from across the country in Belmopan. One of the issues we discussed was the preparation for this storm that is imminent. I believe at this time the first phase is up based on NEMO advisory. As you would know police officers around this time primary function is one to do search and rescue and to ensure hurricane shelters are manned.  We will wait to see when hurricane shelters are opened and people begin to move to these shelters and then have police officers assigned to these shelters to preserve law and order at these shelters. In terms of search and rescue that will be done with B.D.F. and Coast Guards. As you know we don’t have equipment to do search and rescue so we rely heavy on them to be able to ferry us to different areas where we need to do so. Police officers were also advised to make sure they get their own preparations in place, looking after their families, because once the storm is near we might go into twelve hour shift systems and officers might not be able to go home until the storm is over.”
