Accident injures speeding cyclist

Shortly before five this evening, a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a traffic accident that occurred at the corner of Southside Canal and South Street in Belize City. According to eyewitnesses, the young man, who was seen with a beer bottle in hand, was travelling at high speed and as he drove past a stop sign, he was knocked off his bike and thrown several feet into the air before he landed underneath a car that was parked on the opposite side of the street. Angel Novelo, A journalist, who was in the area at the time of the accident, told us what he saw.

“I was approaching from the opposite direction and there was a funeral just crossing the street. This guy drove down, pass through the funeral. When he passed through the funeral he take off, revved the engine hard, right and just zoom. Back wheel skids off and he increased the speed and I watched him, watched him closely when I notice he passed the stop sign and I said he is not going to make it. And as he passed this stop sign, this car was approaching and the car just hit him in the front, boxed him over there and he fly over a car parked over that side.”

We tried contacting the police but were unsuccessful. Sources tell news Five that the injured motorcyclist is a policeman nicknamed “Cowboy.” According to hospital authorities, the man is presently in K.H.M.H. in a serious condition. It is not believed the driver of the car was hurt.
