An Initial Assessment of Damages in Fort George

We also caught up with Public Service Minister and Fort George Area Representative Henry Charles Usher today. On Wednesday, we captured images of how the coastline in that division was inundated and also getting battered by gusty winds from Hurricane Lisa. Over a hundred houses damaged, fifteen flattened, Usher says that there is serious work to do, but the assessment continues.

“I was on the ground yesterday, I visited as many homes as I could, got into as many areas as I could, but there are some areas that are still impassable and that’s why it is important that this cleanup effort be as efficient and as fast as possible.”

“Sir, Fort George, we were out there; we saw the water coming in. I think Radisson pier was damaged once again. Let’s talk about the damage that we are seeing in Fort George.”

“Well I think what has happened is a lot of houses have gone down in our area. In our initial estimate yesterday, we have fifteen houses just in the Fort George area completely destroyed, probably over a hundred damaged. What we were doing yesterday was a damage assessment, going house to house, asking persons what type of damage they got so we could provide them with as immediate  assistance as possible in terms of plywood, zinc, mattress, etc. There will be another long-term effort in terms of rebuilding effort, but we just want to get people back in their homes to be as safe as possible to feel that they are secure as possible.”
