Two men charged in murder of British volunteer
They’re being described as “bad-eggs,” a duo of young men who had the entire village of Red Bank in the Stann Creek District living in fear. Today, twenty one year old Estevan Sho and twenty year old Allan Cal had one more commendation added to their resume… murder. Police are accusing the two men of killing twenty-seven year-old Raleigh International staff member Anna Lightfoot last Monday, as she walked along the deserted road to San Pablo. Sho and Cal were picked up in Red Bank on Sunday as they were getting hair-cuts. Officer in Charge of the Intermediate Southern Formation, Assistant Superintendent Godfrey Smith, says robbery was the motive for the brutal murder of the British woman. Lead investigator Cardinal Smith says a previous crime committed by one of the accused men, provided the break that police were looking for.

“After we get in Red Bank and we start to gather intelligence, we came to understand that these two guys are very much, like to intimidate people. And we gather information that one of them had raped a lady and the lady refused to make a report to the police because they are afraid of the guy. That is Estevan Sho. Subsequent to that, we decided that okay, we’ll make a move to Estevan Sho and his friend. We did that and we tried to contact the female who he had alleged rape and she came forward and said she was indeed raped by Estevan Sho. Because of the pattern of the rape, it led us to believe more that we should deal with Estevan Sho and question him along with his friend concerning the murder.”
That questioning, Smith says, led to confessions by both Sho and Cal that they were responsible for Lightfoot’s death. Pathologist Dr. Mario Estradabran, told reporters that Lightfoot was murdered on August twenty-fourth, the same day that she was reported missing. Estradabran says there were signs on her hands that would seem to suggest that Lightfoot desperately struggled with her knife wielding attackers right to the bitter end.

“She died right away and after she died right away the assailants were trying to be sure that she already died and they were inflicting superficial injuries to different areas of her body, specifically her breasts, other regions of the chest and the thighs. We are not saying just a single stab wound killed her. It was an association of more than one. And basically the multiple stab wounds, the fatal stab wounds, all of them that she had were located on the anterior region of her neck.”
Police say the murder weapon, a knife with a four inch blade, was recovered from Sho’s brother. Based on their investigation Smith says that at this time there are no other suspects in the case. Although Sho and Cal are reputed trouble makers in Red Bank, police say they had no previous criminal record. They were both arraigned in Belize City Magistrate’s Court number one this afternoon, on a charge of murder while Sho was additionally charged with the rape which occurred several months ago.
