Cycling dominates weekend sports

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is the post-election serving of Sports Monday. The cycling community continues to prepare itself for the Santino’s Cycling Classic set for 6th September with weekly outings on the Princess Margaret Drive in Belize City. Yesterday’s card was a monster.

We pick up the action in the ladies 8 lap. It’s final laps as Fiona Humes pulls the trigger. Jane Hannon, on the outside, tries to answer but it’s Camille Solis who challenges from the other side and it’s Camille Solis who takes the big “W” at 22 minutes, 37 seconds. Humes comes in second, Hannon third while Norma Nuñez finishes the top four.

Now at the start of the inter-office 15-lap ride it is a deep field. With two laps to go it’s the solitary figure of Keon Cherrington who dominates the event. The chase group includes Smiling and Burns but they wouldn’t catch up. And here is the winner, Keon Cherrington completing the course in 32 minutes, 64 seconds. Nevertheless the sprint for second place brings excitement and yes it’s former cross country champ Matthew Smiling looking to mash the set and he does while shouting, “da lone lee bwai”. Meanwhile Floyd Burns crosses the finish line third.

Meanwhile folks the big race finds the big guns coming out to play in this thirty-lap showcase, including, Ernest Meighan, big Mike Lewis and Nigel Matus and they start. At halfway point it’s Ernest Meighan and Quinton Hamilton boasting a clean break from the pack. In the final laps Ian Smith traps down the duo to make it a 3-way shootout for the title. Here comes money time. The sprint is in the back. Ian Smith quits. It’s between Meighan and Hamilton. And the baddest man is Ernest Meighan. Quinton Hamilton finishes second, Ian Smith third. Orson Butler pulls in fourth, Jeffrey Zelaya fifth, while Ray Cattouse rounds out the top six.

In football news there is still no word on when the sport will present its annual professional team. As soon as we know, you’ll know.
