P.U.P. in a landslide, Musa is Prime Minister
Almost a quarter century after he made his first foray into electoral politics, Said Musa has become only the third man to hold the title of Prime Minister of Belize. And he did it in convincing fashion, his People’s United Party winning twenty-six out of twenty-nine seats in the House of Representatives and amassing a commanding sixty-two percent of the popular vote in Thursday’s election. Once it became apparent that the rising tide of blue ballots had turned into a tidal wave, Musa made his way to P.U.P. headquarters on Queen Street and made his first address as the leader of not just a political party, but a nation.

“My fellow Belizeans, I would like to begin first of all by thanking all the voters of Belize who came out today to exercise their democratic right to elect a new government of Belize. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the public officials and the police who ensured that this was a smooth election for all of us. I want to thank all the supporters and campaigners of the People’s United Party for bringing about this victory. And I want to thank the supporters of the other party parties for ensuring that this was a peaceful election. I also want to thank the God of might, wisdom and justice who gave us this victory tonight.
My brothers and sisters ours will be a government for all the people of Belize. This has been a long fought campaign. We have worked hard for this victory. This is a victory for the people of Belize. It is a victory for reform; it is a victory for good and accountable government. It is a victory for people’s participation and it’s a victory that gives us an opportunity to deliver on our promises to you the Belizean people. Brothers and sisters this victory is for all the Belizean people, irregardless, irrespective of your political persuasion, of your ethnic background, of your creed, of your class, of your sex. It is a victory for all of us.
It has been a long fought campaign. It is a long night we have gone through tonight. We have worked very hard but we have even harder work ahead of us, hard work, and the reward of hard work will be for you the Belizean people. Thank you very much. God bless all of you.
