Catholics hold Guadalupe procession
The biggest march in Belize over the weekend was not held by the P.U.P., U.D.P. or any other political party. It was organized by the Catholic Church. On Sunday night the annual procession honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe wound its way from Holy Redeemer to St. Martin de Porres in Belize City. It has been held each year since 1946 and seeks protection for the country from the threat of storms and hurricanes. Our Lady of Guadalupe, also considered to be the patron saint of the Americas, appeared as a vision in the early 1600’s to Juan Diego in Mexico. This year’s procession in Belize City was attended by between three and five thousand Catholics. Let us hope their prayers are answered.
