Labor Commissioner to be Appointing Shortly says Labor Minister
And, while the Ministry of Labour has made improvements to its labour complaints management system, the post of labour commissioner remains vacant. We asked Minister Requeña about that position today to find out when an appointment will be made, especially since one of the responsibilities of the Labour Commissioner is to ensure the enforcement of the Labour Act. Here is what he told us.
Oscar Requeña, Minister of Labor
“That process is about to be finalized. One of the delays with the finalization of that process is that the Public Service Commission did not have a chairperson. My understanding about that is that it is about to be completed. We are going to have a new chair for the Public Service Commission. Once that person is in place, that position of the labor commissioner is going to be sanctioned.”

“Do you have a name?”
Oscar Requeña
“Yes, we do have somebody. But, at this point I don’t want to reveal anything until it goes to the Public Service Commission for approval.”
Paul Lopez
“So when do we expect that PSC chair to be installed, and then following the labor commissioner.”
Oscar Requeña
“Right, what I can say to you is that I think it was about two weeks ago, we were informed in Cabinet that person had agreed and we are waiting for the person to retire, because that person is about to retire and I believe that person has now retired. So that process is to come through anytime now.”
