Why Was John Saldivar Really Named?
According to U.D.P. Chairman Mike Peyrefitte, whatever decision is arrived at by the special committee tasked with deliberating John Saldivar’s political future, will done in the best interest of the party. He says that the designation of the former Minister of National Security cannot simply be the result of a bad decision to use a public asset for private purpose.

“We will have, I’m sure, a lengthy discussion on the matter and I can tell you that without a doubt the goal will be to make a recommendation that we believe is in the best interest of the U.D.P. You have to balance, you have to balance perception with fairness as well. There will be deliberation, there will be a discussion on the matter and everybody who will be sitting in that room will have the best interest of the U.D.P. at heart and we have to take everything into consideration before we make a recommendation. Writing a letter to the U.S. asking them for information is not the biggest of deal, you know. I mean, it’s just one part of what we need to assess overall the situation with this particular person. It’s not like, “Oh my God, we wrote to Secretary Blinken. Ooh.” I mean it’s not that at all. As we sit as a committee, we have to assess a whole bunch of things and that’s just one part of it. So we’ll be looking at as much as we need to look at to come to a decision that’s in the best interest of the U.D.P. I find it hard to believe that if you use a government vessel for a private purpose, I find it hard to believe that on that basis alone, you’ll be designated, your wife designated, your children designated, minor child designated. I hardly believe that the designation is based on that.”
