Did You Know? Gibnut Hunting Season is Closed

The hunting season for gibnut is closed from December first to May thirty-first. During this period, no one is permitted to have in their possession gibnut carcasses, nor is anyone allowed to hunt these animals, since it is the time when they reproduce. Deputy Chief Forest Officer, John Pinelo Junior says while it is difficult for an under-resourced Forest Department to patrol the rural areas, there are patrols and awareness campaigns that are done.

“We rely heavily on calls and reports from the public, from concerned citizens, from NGO’s, from the police and from other law enforcement agencies who might intercept people with possible illegal animals. So that’s the first part. And we do get a lot of reports of restaurants selling gibnut meat and people going to sell gibnut meat, of police stopping people on the road and finding in their buckets. So that’s how we react and we have offices all over the country. The second method is our public awareness campaign. You can hear it on the radio form the Forest Department, so we do a lot of publicity so that people are aware.”
