Guatemala Submits Memorial to I.C.J. in Territorial Claim

On Thursday, Guatemala submitted its memorial in the territorial, insular and maritime claim against Belize to the International Court of Justice.  Guatemala’s Foreign Minister Mario Adolfo Bucaro Flores, accompanied by an agent, as well as a co-agent presented the reply and its annexes supporting the allegations of facts and law.  According to a release issued by the Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the countries submission reflects all the factual and legal elements that bolster the Guatemalan claim maintained throughout the dispute and is the result of, (quote), a meticulous and professional process by a team made up of experts of the highest reputation and those who represent and defend the Guatemalan interests in international litigation, (unquote).  Through a procedural order, and after consulting the parties, on June twenty-fourth, the I.C.J. set the deadlines for the second round of written arguments, establishing December eighth for the presentation of Guatemala’s reply, and on June eighth, 2023 for the filing of Belize’s rejoinder.
