Still No Leads in Orange Walk Murder of Byron Herrera
Today, the Belize Police Department held a press briefing on crimes that occurred over the weekend. Among the first topics addressed were two murders which occurred within twenty-four hours of each other. The first was reported in the newscast on Monday; that of twenty-seven-year-old Byron Herrera, but the other, which occurred in Dangriga, somehow went under the radar. In this crime block, we start with the official details of the murder of Herrera on San Fernando Street in Orange Walk Town on Saturday night, just before eleven o’clock. A barrage of bullets was unleashed on Herrera and he died on the spot. While there have been theories on the motive behind the killing, investigators are saying that a motive is still unknown.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“Upon arrival there, they saw a black scooter not too far from the motionless body and the person was identified as Byron Herrera himself, twenty-seven years. He had several gunshot wounds to the body and both feet. He was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where a medical officer pronounced him dead on arrival. We have since launched several operations in that area and still canvassing that maybe somebody in that area may have security cameras up. Right now, we are just appealing to the public for any assistance that could be rendered to the police for us to try to solve this latest murder.”

“Any information to suggest what may have led to him being targeted?”
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
“Duane as usual, a lot of people have their own street side theory, but our officers are trying to establish what was the motive and then hopefully, we will know exactly what direction to look for suspects.”
Duane Moody
“Was he known to police?”
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
“Not before this incident. But like I said, special branch are going on some information that they have gathered through their canvassing and hopefully we will be able to make a detention or arrest soon in connection with that murder.”
