Belize Peace Movement Says “One Man, One Vote”

Robert Lopez

Founder of the Belize Peace Movement, Robert “Bobby” Lopez, notwithstanding the latest legal developments, continues the call for equity where voting by constituency is concerned.  He reiterates the idea of one man, one vote.

Robert Lopez, Founder, Belize Peace Movement

“Whether it’s thirty-one or thirteen or fifty-one, for us, we want the constituencies to be nearly as equal to the others.  So we’re not trying to do the job of the commission or the department.  We want to know that the constitution is being followed to the letter of the law and that my vote is worth as much as your vote, with the accepted international norms and the report clearly speaks to that.  I happen to be registered in the largest constituency which is Stann Creek West.  The last election it had close to nine thousand, eight or nine hundred and I bet it has jumped ten thousand.”

“It is now ten thousand, two hundred and eighty-four.”

“And as Arthur alluded to, we have a very transient rural community because people are moving around for jobs.  You would not know that, well maybe you might know.  I am now in San Pedro, I have already been here more than six months so I am planning to transfer my votes back to San Pedro and San Pedro, you might could educate me, but the last time it was over eight thousand, I bet it’s close to nine thousand.”
