“Police responded to a shooting incident at Mahogany Street where we presently are. Initial information is that three persons were shot. They were taken to the K.H.M.H. where they are receiving treatment at this time. As soon as we have further information as to their condition, we will pass it on.”

“Is there any information as to how this happened? Was it a drive by?”

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Initial information is that they were in a vehicle when shots were fired at them.”

At the time of that interview, there was no information to indicate a motive behind the shooting, but News Five has been informed that one of the victims was detained in connection with the double murder of Cleon Smith and Kendale Ramirez on December fourth on Electric Avenue. Smith and Ramirez were executed inside a parked vehicle that afternoon. The incident is believed to be between feuding gangs. But this shooting comes on the heels of a meeting earlier today where gang leaders recommitted to keeping the peace.

“It’s an ongoing challenge and it is something that will not be fixed overnight. There has to be that continuity and that support where these types of conversations are occurring where we have to break these territory lines because that’s the greatest issue that we are being faced with where some people are still not open to have people from an opposite territory enter their territory without the necessary permission. And so these things are some of the anomalies we’ll have to be able to battle with as we go along. And these will come with time through the rapport building and we learn to start trust each other. Remember some of these gangs have been feuding for years, years on end, and it is sad because the fear factor is real within them and so they are not just looking to drop their guard overnight because of one meeting.”

Hours later, Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero gave an update on the condition of the three victims.

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“We have information that they are all in stable condition and as soon as they are treated, then we will start with our interviews and then we will have more information. But for now I can report that they are all in stable condition.”

News Five has confirmed that a firearm was retrieved in this latest shooting incident. Duane Moody for News Five.
