Elton Bennett, Commandant, Belize Coast Guard
“Outstanding work this year, primarily with our disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Lisa which was a major operation for us. On an average day we had about a hundred and fifty personnel committed to Belize City and Belize District doing different activities, from relief supplies, cleaning up debris and staffing the emergency operation centers in Belize City and Belmopan. So our operations in Belize City were really the highlight. There were many other humanitarian operations this year. Search and rescue cases, I think we saved thirty-four lives at sea this year – major search and rescue year for us. That’s in line with the humanitarian aspect.”
