Belize City Magistrate’s Court Relocates to Coney Drive

The Belize City Magistrate’s Court is relocating to Coney Drive, several weeks after the building it occupies was hard hit by Hurricane Lisa on November second.  As it stands, the lower court is only operational on one side of the Public Building, a situation which was made worse following the collapse of the ceiling on the second floor.  According to Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser, the magistracy will be moving to the building on Coney Drive that was recently occupied by the Treasury Department.  The relocation is temporary while the existing court building on Regent Street undergoes urgent repair.

“We were directly affected by Hurricane Lisa, so that as we speak there is the left side of the building that is not usable any at all and we are only using this side of the building half-day, limiting access to it because we’re not so sure of the safety of the building.  But we managed to find a new location and we’re moving to Coney Drive where the treasury use to be, 1729 I believe it is, Coney Drive which should be our temporary new home.  That move, I am hoping that we can be operational on the third of January.  Until then, we will still be serving the public, limitedly from here in the mornings, from eight ‘til about twelve and this should happen until about Tuesday, of next week.  We then will have to be moving everything, so that as far as the public is concerned, if we have any matters, police officers will be here, should be here to give them their dates for next year.  But we should be fully up and operational by the third of January.”
