Tourism Industry Loses Two Guides in Less Than A Week

Abil Castaneda

The tourism industry lost two tour guides in less than a week in separate and very different circumstances. On Christmas Eve, an unexpected flash flood in western Belize claimed the life of thirty-nine-year-old Julio Escobar, as he and fellow tour guides were taking in tourists who had gone on an expedition for that day. And on Tuesday night, sixty-two-year-old Emert Flowers was shot dead inside his yard on Racecourse Street in Belize City. The deaths come as a great loss to the industry and today, Director of Quality Management, Capacity Development, and Cruise for the Belize Tourism Board, Abil Castaneda, expressed regret over the incidents.

“I would like, on behalf of the Belize Tourism Board, express our condolences to the families of two tour guides now that we have lost in a span of a few days. Mr Julio Escobar was the name of this gentleman from Armenia and also condolences to the family of Mr. Emert Flowers. He lost his life last night in one of the gunshot incidents that happened in Belize City, so we just wanted to share our condolences and deepest regret to the families.”
