Belize City man killed in Northern Highway accident
It was a rough weekend for Belizean motorists as three men are dead as the result of separate traffic accidents. This morning twenty-four year old Ronnel Bucknor, a mechanic at Bowen and Bowen workshop, had just been given personal time off from work and was traveling up the Northern Highway around six thirty. According to the police, upon reaching mile two and a half near Roses Paper Products, he decided to overtake a vehicle that was traveling in front of him. As Bucknor pulled out to pass he crashed head-on into an Escalante Bus that had just stopped in the opposite lane to let off passengers. The small black Nissan was mashed beyond recognition while Bucknor was crushed and died on the way to the hospital. At the scene of the accident, there were no visible signs of skid marks, indicating that Bucknor either did not have time to hit the brakes or he suffered mechanical problems. While at this time the police are saying it may have been bad judgement on Bucknor’s part to try and overtake when the road was not clear, family members say the accident is one that was just waiting to happen. According to the Bucknors the bus should have pulled off the side of the highway to deposit its passengers, instead of just stopping on the road. Police investigations into the accident continue.
