Attorney Questions ComPol’s Approach in Revisiting Fareed Ahmad Murder Case
Since the arrest of Police Corporal Elmer Nah in connection with the double murder of brothers Jon and David Ramnarace, there have been calls for the Belize Police Department to reopen the Fareed Ahmad murder case. Viewers will recall that late in trial, Police Constable Michelle Brown made a statement from the dock accusing Nah of firing the shot that killed Ahmad back in 2017. Nah was then called to the stand where he claimed that on the night of Ahmad’s murder he was at home with his uncle, then Senior Superintendent Marco Vidal. But, suspicions of Nah’s involvement in that homicide have increased, since his arrest for the Ramnarace brother’s homicide. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is now on record saying that he is seeking to consult with the attorneys who were involved in that matter, Audrey Matura and Dickie Bradley; in an effort to make the case files public. He is hopeful that this will convince the critics that there was no cover-up. Well, tonight one attorney is challenging the ComPol’s approach in revisiting the Fareed Ahmad murder investigation, starting with Bradley’s involvement.
Arthur Saldivar, Attorney-at-Law
“We know that Dickey Bradley is certainly one of the preeminent defense attorneys in the country. When we speak of attorneys and their involvement in criminal matters we also have to maintain the understanding that we are only human. Mr. Bradley did have the remit for Elmer Nah in the plane landing case. That case is still not concluded, so in that regard I don’t believe that Mr. Bradley will be the best person for the commissioner to reach out to for an objective appreciation of what a file may contain. But, before we even go there, I wouldn’t want the public to believe that the file being spoken of is what that actually does what the commissioner is hoping it could do. Because, we have to appreciate that if you have led an investigation into the activities of x, you cannot use the investigation geared towards the activities of x to convict y. So, you cannot use the Michelle Brown investigation to build a case or find a case on Elmer Nah.”
